DOG LISTENER PRESENTATIONS

Helping Kids Learn to Safely Interact with the Dogs in their Community.

Dogs communicate with us all the time. The trick is learning how to listen.

Through the AKC Dog Listener Program, Olean Kennel Club members visit schools, libraries, youth organizations, and other community groups to help children and teens (and even adults) better understand how dogs communicate, and how people can interact with them safely and respectfully.

It’s a fun, approachable program with an important goal: giving young people the knowledge and confidence to make safer choices around dogs.

Learning to Listen

Dogs may not use words, but they have plenty to say. Their posture, facial expressions, movement, and behavior can tell us when they’re comfortable, excited, uncertain, frightened, or asking for space.

During an OKC Dog Listener presentation, young people learn practical skills for understanding and interacting with dogs, including how to:

  • Recognize basic canine body language and communication
  • Understand when a dog may be comfortable, worried, or uncomfortable
  • Know when it is, and isn’t, appropriate to approach a dog
  • Ask permission before petting someone else’s dog
  • Approach and interact with dogs in a safer, more respectful way
  • Respect a dog’s personal space and recognize when a dog would rather be left alone
  • Make good choices when encountering unfamiliar dogs

The goal isn’t to make every child a dog expert. It’s to give them a better understanding of the animals they encounter at home and throughout their community, and a few simple skills that can make those interactions safer and more positive for everyone.

Great for Youth Groups of All Kinds

The Dog Listener Program can be a great addition to programming for:

      • Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops
      • Libraries, schools and classrooms
      • Homeschool groups
      • After-school programs
      • Youth camps
      • 4-H and other youth organizations
      • Other community groups serving children and teens.

OKC members bring the program directly into the community, making it an easy way to add engaging, dog-centered education to your group’s calendar.

Presentations can be especially valuable for young people who already love dogs, but they’re just as important for children who may have limited experience with them. Understanding how dogs communicate helps build confidence, empathy, respect, and safer interactions.

Building a More Dog-Savvy Community

Teaching children how to interact safely with dogs fits directly into Olean Kennel Club’s commitment to responsible dog ownership and greater community knowledge and appreciation of dogs.

Good relationships between people and dogs depend on communication going both ways. When young people learn to recognize what a dog is telling them, and respect those signals, they’re building skills that can stay with them for a lifetime.

And that helps create a community that is safer and more welcoming for both people and dogs.
