AKC FAST CAT TRIALS

Ready. Set. RUN!

Think your dog is fast? Fast CAT is your chance to find out just how fast.

AKC Fast CAT is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time down a straight course while chasing a moving lure — affectionately known in the Fast CAT world as the “trash bunny.” It may not look much like a rabbit, but try telling that to a dog who has just spotted it flying down the field.

It’s simple, fast-paced, incredibly fun to watch, and a great way to tap into your dog’s natural love of running and chasing.

Olean Kennel Club currently hosts two weekends of Fast CAT trials each year, one in July and one in October, at Hinsdale Memorial Park on Gile Hollow Road in Hinsdale, New York, near Olean.

Whether you’re chasing your next title, hoping for a new personal best, or wondering what your couch potato can do when the trash bunny starts moving, we’d love to see you at the starting line.

Fast CAT Is for All Kinds of Dogs

You don’t need a sighthound, or even a particularly athletic-looking dog, to give Fast CAT a try.

Big dogs. Little dogs. Long legs. Short legs. Serious competitors. Complete goofballs.

And while some dogs seem to understand the assignment the second the lure moves, others may need a run or two before they decide that chasing a plastic bag across a field is, in fact, the greatest game anyone has ever invented. That’s part of the fun.

How Fast Is Your Dog?

During a Fast CAT run, your dog sprints 100 yards after the lure while their time is recorded. That time is converted into miles per hour, so when the run is over, you’ll finally have an answer to the question:

“Just how fast is my dog?”

Dogs also earn points based on their runs and work toward AKC Fast CAT titles as they accumulate points over time. Learn more here.

But you don’t need to be chasing ribbons or rankings to enjoy the sport. For many teams, the best part is simply watching their dog realize that, for once, they’re actually supposed to chase the thing moving away from them.

How to calculate Fast CAT MPH and Points?

Your qualifying ribbon at our trials will provide all of this information calculated for you. But you can also use this online calculator.

New to Fast CAT Trials?

Fast CAT is one of the most beginner-friendly ways to get involved in AKC dog sports.

Before each Olean Kennel Club trial, we publish a premium list containing the important details for that event, including entry information, fees, opening and closing dates, trial rules, event contacts, and instructions for submitting your entry.

Think of the premium as your guide to the trial.

When entries open, follow the instructions in the premium to enter your dog. Some events may also offer day-of entries when space is available, but availability varies, so always check the individual trial information before making plans.

As the event approaches, entered exhibitors will receive additional information about arrival times, run scheduling, and other trial-day details.
