This fun, foundation-building program is designed for young dogs and their handlers to begin learning the skills that create confident, well-mannered companions. S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility—the building blocks of lifelong success for both puppies and their people.

More than just a puppy class, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy helps you and your dog start building a strong relationship from the very beginning. Through positive training, guided practice, and real-world skills, you’ll learn how to communicate clearly with your puppy while helping them grow into a happy, polite, and confident dog. It’s a wonderful first step for families who want better manners at home, a stronger bond, and a great foundation for future training and sports.

What You’ll Learn

In this class, you and your puppy will work on the essential skills every young dog needs. Training focuses on early manners, confidence, and teamwork while introducing puppies to new experiences in a safe, supportive environment. You’ll learn how to guide your puppy through important early lessons like attention, handling, polite behavior, and basic cues. At the end of class you will have the opportunity to take the 20 STEPS To Success: The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test.

Requirements

• Puppy must be under 1 year of age at the end of class to earn certificate/title.
• Open to all puppies, purebred or mixed breed.
• Puppies must have all vaccinations for their age. (Bordetella/Kennel Cough is highly recommended)
• The puppy and handler must attend at least 6 weeks of class to qualify for test.

What to Bring

• High-value treats (soft and irresistible!)
• A flat buckle collar or harness (Gentle Leader may be recommended)
• 4 or 6 foot leash (no retractable leashes)
• Water and a bowl
• Clean sneakers (for handler)
• A positive, patient mindset and a willingness to learn alongside your puppy
